While there has been no official confirmation from FCA US LLC, there is gossip that a potential RAM 2000 may be in the works. As you can probably guess, this would be a pickup that falls in between the RAM 1500 and RAM 2500.
So, where did such rumors stem from? Apparently, someone in a RAM forum says to have heard it from a RAM representative during a Christmas event at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The representative also indicated that the truck would have an Ecodiesel engine. Other than that, though, there is no other information. The rep also said that FCA US LLC is only “thinking about it” at this point.
Naturally, with such a rumor comes speculation. One suggests that a hypothetical RAM 2000 will essentially be a RAM 1500 with upgraded leaf springs for increased payload capacity. Another forum user visualizes a RAM 2000 as a RAM 1500 with a heavier transmission, upgraded rear springs and a modified rear axle.
There is also question whether there is enough consumer demand for a RAM 2000. Some have suggested that instead of a RAM 2000, developers should just make minor modifications to the 2018 RAM 2500, perhaps reduce payload capacity by about 500 pounds and add softer springs. The vehicle can then be marketed as a deluxe RAM 1500 trim.
